Water is Life!

Click here! Act's 1:8 Ministry's Water Tower Project

Uganda has been blessed with an abundance of water through rivers, lakes and wetlands. In recent decades however, population growth and mismanaged sanitation has caused many of these sources to become unsanitary. The people continue to use whatever sources are at their disposal for consumption. Dirty water has caused stunted growth and sickness in Ugandan children. The National Association of Professional Environmentalists (NAPE) reports that 1 in 7 Ugandan children do not live to see their 5th birthday.  29,400 children die every year from diarrhoea due to consuming filthy drinking water. (http://www.nape.or.ug/threats/watersan.php) Poorer countries cannot afford to build water sanitation facilities and the people could spend up to four hours a day waiting in line for unsafe water that is used for bathing, cooking and drinking. Just getting to a water source can be a lengthy journey.

The link under the photo above takes you to Acts 1:8 Ministries and their Water Tower Campaign. It only takes $600 to build a life saving water tower to serve an entire village of families. Acts 1:8 Ministries has already built 40 towers since 2008 thanks to the donations of caring individuals. Ryan Pickett of the Green Bay Packers is an active participant of the campaign, donating 2 water towers for every 10 tackles he makes.

Acts 1:8 Ministries brings Christian bands to Wisconsin area just over the border from us in  Upper Michigan. We attend several events every year in support of the ministry. In the future, I would love to specifically be part of the campaign to Tackle A Tower. It would be a great service learning project for older children to take on as well.

The following video link shows how these towers are changing lives. http://youtu.be/hwpW6DzlZLU

  1. Tammra,

We take for granted all the luxurious we are afforded as Americans. We expect to have water just because that is what we have known forever. I can say that I never even thought about there being someone in the world that didn't have an adequate supply of water. We are truly blessed as a nation. Thank you for sharing this with us. I am taking this link to work with me and presenting it at our next staff meeting.

  2. The campaign would be a great service learning project for older children. I agree with Angela. We do take for granted many things that come "naturally" for us. It's sad to think that 1 in 7 children don't make it to their 5th birthday. That touched me, I have a 6 year old and a 4 year old and I couldn't imagine thinking about that. Thanks for the great info and video.
